As a devoted Newcastle United fan, there is nothing quite like the thrill of match day—when the atmosphere at St. James’ Park is electric, and the roar of us Geordies echoes through the streets.

Unfortunately, for many of us who are Newcastle United members, getting a ticket to experience this first hand has become an increasingly frustrating process, particularly with the ballot system.

Like many other fans, I entered this season full of hope, confident that as one of the Newcastle United members, it would give me a fair shot at attending matches. However, the reality has been disappointing.

Last season, I was fortunate enough to secure five home tickets out of the 17 ballots I applied for—not a fantastic rate, but still better than nothing. This season, my luck has completely run out. I’ve applied for seven games and received zero tickets in return. Zero.

What makes this even harder to swallow is the lack of transparency around the ballot system itself.

It’s frustrating not knowing how many tickets are available, who’s getting them, and how often certain Newcastle United members are succeeding while others seem to be left out in the cold. How can we be sure the process is fair, if we can’t even see how it’s working?

More than that, you start to question if paying to be one if the Newcastle United members is even worth it these days. The benefits of being a member are shrinking as it becomes harder and harder to get tickets through official channels.

Meanwhile, third-party websites are flooded with tickets, often at highly inflated prices. It’s infuriating to see tickets that should be in the hands of loyal fans being sold for two, three, or four times their face value. Something has to be done to stop this, or it’ll only get worse.

The bottom line is this: if fans continue to struggle to get tickets through the ballot, the NUFC membership scheme could soon become a thing of the past.

Why would fans continue to pay for a membership if it doesn’t offer them a chance to attend games?

In the long run, this could lead to a significant drop in revenue for the club, and that would be a loss for everyone—fans, players, and management alike.

Newcastle United is nothing without its loyal supporters, but right now, it feels like those supporters are being overlooked.

It’s time for the club to reevaluate how the ballot system works and ensure that loyal members have a real opportunity to cheer their team on from the stands. If not, many of us will be left wondering if it’s worth staying in the game at all.
