Newcastle United vs Chelsea – Match preview and team news

Form

Newcastle: DWDLL

Eddie Howe will be demanding more from his team with Newcastle having won just one of their last five games in all competitions. That win was a narrow 1-0 success against League Two AFC Wimbledon in the third round of this competition.

Back-to-back Premier League defeats have left Newcastle in the bottom half of the table and goals have been an issue for the Magpies of late.

Alexander Isak has scored just twice in the Premier League this season, a downturn in form after becoming the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer to score 20+ goals in a top-flight season in 2023/24.

Howe might not quite be under real pressure right now, but improvement will be expected ahead of huge games with Chelsea and Arsenal this week.

Chelsea: WDLWW

Enzo Maresca has made a positive start to his reign at Chelsea with the club’s sole defeats of the season coming against the Premier League’s top two – Manchester City and Liverpool.

Chelsea beat Newcastle at the weekend in West London, with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer enough to see off the Magpies. The result leaves Chelsea fifth in the Premier League table, a point outside the Champions League places.

Palmer and Jackson have started the season in fine form and continue to show encouraging signs of chemistry. The former’s winner was his seventh goal of the Premier League campaign, in a week where the 22-year-old ranked 25th in the Ballon d’Or.

Jackson, meanwhile, now has nine goals and assists in nine Premier League appearances this season.

Last Meeting

Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle, 27/10/2024, Premier League

Just days ago, Chelsea came out on top in a Premier League meeting between the teams at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer was the architect of a big win for the Blues, as the 22-year-old scored the winner and has an instrumental role in Chelsea’s first. Palmer’s sublime pass opened up the visitor’s backline in the build up to Nicolas Jackson’s opener, but Alexander Isak levelled fro Newcastle before half-time.

Chelsea’s winner arrived just seconds into the second half as Palmer scored his seventh league goal of the campaign.
