Rennes have signed French centre-back Anthony Rouault (23) from VfB Stuttgart, both clubs have announced. The 23-year-old has put pen to paper over a four-and-a-half-year deal with Les Rouge et Noir. Rouault makes his return to France after his breakout years in Toulouse which earned him a move to Stuttgart. Rennes’ outlay to sign Rouault reportedly rises to €15m in taking into account performance-related add-ons.
Rennes were looking to bolster Habib Beye’s defensive options as former Napoli centre-back Leo Østigård has dropped down the pecking order at the back. The Norwegian international was an unused substitute for Beye’s Ligue 1 managerial debut win against Strasbourg on Sunday. Rennes also had the means to invest in their defense as Eintracht Frankfurt triggered Arthur Theate’s €16m purchase option.
