As you can tell by the title, it is six years to the day since Tottenham Hotspur beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley in the Champions League round of 16, with perhaps the best game they had during their 18+ months playing at Wembley Stadium.
For the game, Mauricio Pochettino opted for an XI of (3412); Lloris; Foyth, Sanchez, Alderweireld; Aurier, Sissoko, Winks, Vertonghen; Eriksen; Son, Lucas. Harry Kane was injured for this game.
After a quarter of an hour, Foyth was caught on the edge of his own box, allowing Christian Pulisic a big chance, but as he drove into the box, his left footed effort from an angle was well kept out by Lloris.
Towards the end of the first half, the game began to open, with both sides having opportunities - with Eriksen and Son having the best of those chances for Spurs, and Dan-Axel Zagadou for Dortmund. Nevertheless, the sides went into the break goalless.
However, that would change after a minute of the second half. From the left hand side, a superb cross from Vertonghen was delicately volleyed in by Son, cushioning the ball into the back of the net with a sublime finish.
After that, Spurs continued to probe and be the better side, but without scoring a second. That was, until the 82nd minute. From the right hand side, a brilliant cross from Aurier superbly picked out Vertonghen, who scored a volley of his own. Quite similar to the goal he had assisted himself. Incredible performance from the Belgian.
Then, with four minutes remaining - an inswinging Eriksen corner was met by substitute Fernando Llorente, who glanced a header home, putting an ended to tie once and for good. The perfect way to end a perfect night.
In stoppage time, Erik Lamela and Vincent Wanyama appeared as substitutes, whilst Paulo Gazzaniga, Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose, and Oliver Skipp were unused subs. With Ben Davies injured for the game, Son is the only player from the match day squad who is still at the club to this day.
When looking at Leagues the starting XI currently play in, it reads as: 1x MLS, 2x Belgium Pro League, 1x Brasileirao Betano, 1x La Liga, 1x Championship, 1x Turkish Super Lig, and 3x Premier League (including Son).
It was just an all round brilliant performance. Particularly from Vertonghen, whom was not just playing as a left-back, but a left wing-back, and put in a performance as good as that - scoring, assisting, and just generally playing superbly well. What a night.
