Eddie Howe’s old team unable to do him a favour last night, Bournemouth losing 3-1 at Manchester City.

In a game of not a lot of clear chances, Marmoush and Silva putting the home side 2-0 up at the break.

Second half seeing Bournemouth increasingly looking more of a threat and when Kovacic got a red card on 67 minutes, it looked like that could let the Cherries in with a chance. However, Cook red carded only six minutes later for a daft challenge and that was that.

Gonzalez scoring a late third for Man City and Jebbison a consolation very late in added time.

So this is how the Premier League table now currently looks on the morning of Wednesday morning (21 May 2025) after Man City’s win last night:

Liverpool and Arsenal having already guaranteed the top two places and Champions League football.

Man City now in a very strong position with last night’s win rising from sixth to third and two points clear of Newcastle, Villa and Chelsea, then Forest another point behind.

However, still any three of these five clubs can get top five and a Champions League place, depending on Sunday’s results.

When it comes to predicting what that final Premier League table will look like after the 38th round of fixtures in May 2025, Opta have done some updated analysis after last night’s Man City result.

Using their latest data simulations, Opta analysis has shown this as the most likely 2024/25 Premier League table come the end of the season – Predicted final table as of Wednesday 21 May 2025:

As you can see, Opta forecasting only three points to cover 3rd to 7th after Sunday’s final round of matches.

Opta now predicting Manchester City to end up third.

Newcastle United forecast to get fourth.

Both Villa and Chelsea now predicted to end up on 67 points and then Forest on 66 points.

Which indicates that Opta are seeing the most likely outcomes as draws in the Man U v Villa and Forest v Chelsea games. Though Villa rated slightly more likely to get a win at Man U, than Chelsea at Forest. Leading to the fractional advantage for Villa over Chelsea in the Opta prediction.

However, the reality is, that if those two ended up both finishing on the same number of points, Chelsea have a much better goal difference and would therefore end up fifth, above Villa in the final Premier League table, who would be sixth. With Forest forecast to come seventh.

The equation for Eddie Howe’s is simple, win against Everton and guaranteed Champions League. Still possible of course for United to get top five even if they draw on Sunday, or even lose…but here’s hoping we simply do the business ourselves.
