Known for his versatility, work rate, and technical ability, Hargreaves made a significant impact at every club he played for. His career, though marred by injuries, saw him achieve great success both domestically and internationally.
Hargreaves began his professional career in Germany with Bayern Munich after moving from Canada as a teenager. He made his first-team debut in 2000 and quickly established himself as a key figure in Bayern’s midfield. His ability to play as a defensive midfielder, right-back, or even central defender made him invaluable to the team.
In 2007, Hargreaves joined Manchester United for a reported fee of around £17 million. He was brought in to strengthen the midfield with his tenacity and European experience. His debut season was his most successful, as he played a crucial role in United’s 2007-08 Champions League-winning campaign. Unfortunately, persistent injuries limited his contributions in the following seasons.
After being released by Manchester United, Hargreaves signed a one-year deal with Manchester City. However, his injury struggles continued, and he only made a handful of appearances before retiring from professional football in 2012.
