According to reports in Uruguay, the nation’s Ministry of the Interior first declared that the match would take place at Peñarol’s home ground but would only feature home supporters in a bid to avoid potential retaliatory clashes while citing a “lack of security conditions for visitors.”

After CONMEBOL applied pressure for Botafogo fans to be allowed to attend by threatening to change the match to a closed-doors affair, a new venue was officially selected on Tuesday.

Centenario Stadion, often reserved for the Uruguayan national team, will now host the second leg tie on Wednesday after being deemed suitable for the event.

While Peñarol will have wanted to enjoy every potential advantage in their bid to overturn their heavy first-leg defeat, this will have to do.
