Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has agreed a one-year contract extension with the club, with the option of an additional year, according to The Athletic.

The 53-year-old’s current deal was set to expire at the end of this season. The new contract will see him remain at the Etihad Stadium until at least 2025. An official announcement confirming the deal is expected in the coming days.

Guardiola’s future had been a subject of speculation, particularly after the departure of director of football Txiki Begiristain last month. Sporting CP man Hugo Viana will replace him in the hierarchy. It led to speculation about who might follow him to England.

Reports had linked Ruben Amorim to the City job, but the Portuguese manager ultimately joined Manchester United after spanking Guardiola and City in the Champions League.

Since joining City in 2016, Guardiola has led the club to unprecedented success, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the Champions League in 2023, further solidifying his reputation as one of the best managers of the modern era.

Despite recent setbacks, including a four-game losing streak, Guardiola’s side remain just five points away from Liverpool at the summit with 27 games to go.

They still have a decent shot at qualifying for the knockout phase of the Champions League and will back themselves to do so. If there is anyone who can turn their fortunes around, it is Guardiola.

They were reportedly keen on the former Bayern Munich boss and there was reciprocated interest but it appears he will stay in Europe for one more season.
