Goals from Michael Olise and Harry Kane had Bayern Munich in a comfortable position with one foot in the Champions League Round of 16, but a late goal from Daizen Maeda gave Celtic a lifeline heading into the return leg at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich dominate Celtic, but hosts have belief

Celtic took part in their first Champions League knockout tie in 12 years when they hosted Bayern Munich at Parkhead on Wednesday night. With their ferocious intensity that their fans are accustomed to watching, Celtic’s Nicolas Kühn had the ball in Bayern’s net after just 26 seconds. Cutting inside from the right and curling one beyond Manuel Neuer, Adam Idah was judged to be offside. It was certainly an early warning sign for Vincent Kompany’s side, who fielded three midfielders – Konrad Laimer, Eric Dier and Raphael Guerreiro – in a back four alongside Dayot Upamecano.

Bayern Munich went on to dominate possession in the first-half but rarely tested Kasper Schmeichel despite having 65 percent of the ball. Celtic failed to register a shot in the first 45 and Harry Kane came close, but it was until Michael Olise that gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time with a thunderous left-footed effort.

Kane then doubled Bayern’s lead four minutes after the break, finding himself unmarked at the far post to score a left-footed volley from a corner. Arne Engels then went down under the challenge of Upamecano but after a four minute VAR delay, the Frenchman was judged to have got the smallest of touches on the ball.

Daizen Maeda – who started after Celtic successfully appealed his ban – kept Bayern, and Neuer, on their toes with the Japanese attacker showcasing his relentless pressing, forcing the visitors into some hurried clearances. He then headed Celtic to within one of Bayern after finding himself in the right place at the right time, giving the hosts belief heading into the final 10 minutes.

In the end, Celtic didn’t find an equaliser but their performance will certainly give them confidence heading to the Allianz Arena next Tuesday. Bayern Munich have only lost once at home all season in competitions, but if Brendan Rodgers side play with their usual ferocious intensity, they can certainly get a result and Bayern will have to be at their best.
