This year’s Coupe de France final was admittedly secondary for both sides involved – Paris Saint-Germain had their second-ever Champions League final to look forward to, while Reims were in the midst of a two-legged relegation playoff. For Luis Enrique’s men, a second domestic treble was nevertheless for the taking, while the Champagne side were dreaming of a first major title in over half a century.

Les Parisiens did field a first-choice starting eleven, and duly dominated the opening exchanges at the Stade de France as both Ousmane Dembélé and then Désiré Doué came close to an early opener. It was Bradley Barcola, though, who eventually broke the deadlock just before the 20-minute mark by beating Yehvann Diouf one-on-one, finishing off a counter-attack in response to one of the few times Samba Diawara’s men had ventured forward. The French international doubled his tally minutes later by slotting in Doué’s ball across goal into an empty net.

There would be little reaction from the relegation-threatened Reims, with frontman Jordan Siebatcheu scarcely seeing any service as his teammates were pinned back in their own half. Achraf Hakimi would wrap up the match for the Parisians in the closing stages of the first half, arriving at the back post in time to convert a Barcola cross through the legs of a helpless Diouf.

PSG would end the first half with an 80% share of possession, a pattern which continued after the break. Content with managing their lead while expending as little effort as possible (and understandably so), the Ligue 1 winners effectively neutralised the match at both ends. Oumar Diakité’s introduction in the second half offered a handful of incisive moments to Reims, but ultimately there were no real obstacles in Parisians’ march to a 16th Coupe de France title.

Under Luis Enrique, Paris Saint-Germain will have claimed two consecutive domestic trebles – this year, in even more dominant fashion despite some early-season struggles as the Asturian was rebuilding his attack. Now, the Parisians’ attention turns to Munich in a week’s time. Reims, meanwhile, still have their top-flight survival to secure back at home against Metz on Thursday.
