Plymouth Argyle should turn to Millwall's Macaulay Langstaff if Ryan Hardie departs the club in the summer.
Plymouth Argyle could lose star striker Ryan Hardie this summer, as Wrexham AFC have reignited their interest in signing the striker in the upcoming transfer window.
The Scot has become a fan favourite over the years at Home Park, always offering a reliable source of goals no matter what division he's playing in. Unsurprisingly, this has drawn interest from Championship clubs.
Despite a valiant effort from Miron Muslic's men, Argyle were unable to complete the great escape and were condemned to the third tier of English football.
With that in mind, key players could look to depart Plymouth and seek a new challenge in a higher division. We've already seen that Mustapha Bundu will be departing the club in the summer, but could his attacking colleague follow him out the door?
If so, Millwall's Macaulay Langstaff could well be the perfect like-for-like replacement for the former Rangers prospect, as he could look to replicate the goalscoring form he showed at Notts County before his move to The Den.
The Scottish striker is a very popular figure on the South Coast, thanks to his years of excellent service to the club, which has seen him make well over 200 appearances in all competitions.
It's fair to say that no Argyle supporter would want to see Hardie leave Home Park, but their chances of keeping him have decreased significantly following their relegation to League One.
Hardie ended the Championship season on fire, coming up with some crucial goals that helped Plymouth almost pull off the escape of all escapes. This has naturally seen eyebrows raised in the Championship, as plenty of clubs could look to prize the Scot away from his long-term home.
Fortunately, Hardie remains under contract with the Pilgrims, so the club is under absolutely no obligation to even entertain offers for him. However, if an offer too good to turn down comes in, they could be forced to find a replacement.
Flashback to two years ago, Langstaff was a goal machine tearing up the National League and then League Two with Notts County. This form saw him rewarded with a move to Championship outfit Millwall.
However, the striker was unable to continue his rich scoring form in the second tier, and has fallen down the pecking order at The Den. In his one season at the club, the 28-year-old played 34 games and scored just once.
It seems likely that the ex-Notts County star will be on his way out of the door at the London club, and a fresh start at Plymouth being the successor to Hardie could be just what he needs to revive his career.
Langstaff has already shown his excellence in front of goal in League Two, and could adapt to life in League One much quicker than he did in the Championship.
The striker is also a similar player to the current Argyle number nine, possessing good pace which would make him just as effective in a high press, as well as a proven eye for goal that any Hardie replacement would require.
Langstaff would also suit Muslic's brand of fast-paced attacking football that he'll likely be looking to employ in League One. This could bring the best out of the striker once again, like Notts County's system did a couple of years ago.
