After playing his cards close to his chest ahead of the match, VfL Wolfsburg head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl ultimately opted to give Brentford loanee Mads Roerslev his first Bundesliga start on Saturday. The Danish international did so, winning a little less than half of his duels and successfully completing two of his four long.
Roerslev’s first start lasted just under an hour. On 58 minutes, he was taken off in favour of Danish compatriot and fellow new January arrival Andreas Skov Olsen. Hasenhüttl took care to emphasise that the Dane-for-Dane swap wasn’t related to Roerslev’s performance at the post match press conference. Instead, it was a tactical switch.
“I made the substitution because I wanted to bring on Skov Olsen, an important winger,” Hasenhüttl explained. “At the beginning, I think he did very well. It was his first game from the start, and the team was generally not in the flow.“
