Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is being linked with the vacant Rangers job, which would be bad news for English clubs with an interest in him.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is reported to be close to the shortlist for the vacant managerial position at Rangers, which could mean disappointing news for English clubs interested in the 36-year-old.

Rumours have been circulating for some time that Rohl could be set to leave Hillsborough.

Speaking after their final match against Watford earlier in May, he repeatedly talked about the club in the past tense, while a couple of weeks earlier he'd clarified that the Wednesday owner, Dejphon Chansiri, already knew of his decision regarding his future.

Sky Sports are now reporting that Rohl is one of several likely to make it onto the shortlist for the vacant manager's job at the Scottish giants Rangers, with RB Leipzig, Southampton and Leicester City also reported to have taken a close interest in him.

Rohl will have no shortage of suitors if he leaves Hillsborough

As a young coach who's overseen a substantial improvement in what had been an ailing team since his arrival at Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, Danny Rohl will not be short of suitors this summer.

Leicester City and Southampton will both be falling from the Premier League this season.

Southampton sacked Ivan Juric in April and have been looking for a replacement ever since, while Leicester have been expected to offload Ruud Van Nistelrooy come the end of their season, with his appointment in November 2024 having yielded just three League wins.

Barry Ferguson has been the interim manager at Ibrox since Phillipe Clement was sacked in February. Rangers are currently 17 points adrift of the already-crowned champions Celtic, while they also suffered the ignominy of a shock exit in the Scottish Cup at home to Queen's Park.

Rohl's reputation has grown since he arrived at Wednesday

Rohl arrived at Hillsborough in October 2023 and his reputation has only grown since then.

Sheffield Wednesday were bottom of the Championship with just three points from eleven games upon his arrival, and it took until there were just three games of the season left to play before they finally managed to scramble out of the relegation places, eventually finishing 20th, two places and three points above the drop zone.

This season saw a substantial improvement, although it started poorly with a run of just one win from their first six League games. Rohl, however, managed to get the team into mid-table by the autumn, and Wednesday finished the season in 12th place in the Championship.

Departure was always likely for such a highly-rated young coach

Despite a substantial improvement on their performance last season, it was always likely that Danny Rohl could be tempted away from Hillsborough, in small part on account of the occasionally erratic ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, who has long had an antagonised relationship with Wednesday supporters.

As recently as April 2025, the House of Commons was told that the club owner was 'running out of money' following a meeting with representatives from the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust. The club was put under a registration embargo in November 2024 over amounts outstanding to HMRC, while supporters held a protest march against his ownership before their final home League game of the season against Portsmouth.

Expectation levels at Rangers will always be extremely high, but they will start next season in the Champions League Second Qualifying Round, and European football may well appeal to Rohl. As well as this, takeover talks with 49ers Enterprises, who are also the owners of Leeds United, have been taking place.

Leaving for either Southampton or Leicester would give Rohl the substantial advantage of parachute payments for summer rebuilds at either club, but the interest of Rangers could yet throw a spanner in the works of any English club seeking to secure his services this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters may well be concerned that any of these three clubs alone might look like a better option for their manager than their club has of late, and they're unlikely to be the only ones interested in this highly-rated young coach.
