Sky Germany reports that RB Leipzig are in talks with midfielder Xaver Schlager over extending his contract at the Red Bull Arena.
The Austrian is one of Leipzig’s most crucial players in how they play but has struggled with injuries this season after returning from a torn ligament injury.
Schalger’s contract does not expire in Leipzig until 2026, but the club wants to avoid a situation similar to Konrad Laimer who left on a free transfer at the end of his deal. Leipzig wants clarity on Schlager’s future by the end of the season, but they still wish to keep the 27-year-old.
Speaking to Sky Sports Austria, Schlager gave insight into his decision-making:
“First and foremost, I would like to play in the Champions League again because it wasn’t enough for me this year. Otherwise, as a little boy, I always dreamed of England. I don’t make a big deal out of it. I say that openly and honestly. England is the top league where everyone wants to go because it’s simply so spectacular and there are so many very good teams there. But I feel very comfortable in Leipzig. If you’re healthy and fit, that’s already a great thing. I’d like to have that one day and just play and have fun for myself. Then I can calmly see what the future holds for me.”
Leipzig’s 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend now means that are now fifth in the table and are only three points off of the Champions League spots.
In the summer, Leipzig are planning a fresh start on the pitch and in the dugout, whether Schalger is a part of that or not, is yet to be seen.
