According to a report from SPORT, Real Madrid have taken a decisive early step in the summer transfer market by approaching Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, asking for patience as they work through the future of Andriy Lunin.

With Thibaut Courtois expected to extend his contract, the writing appears to be on the wall for Lunin, who is keen on finding regular first-team football away from the Bernabeu.

This situation has prompted Madrid to identify Joan Garcia as a long-term solution between the sticks. At just 24 years of age, Garcia has impressed with his maturity, reflexes, and command in goal for Espanyol.

It is no surprise that several Premier League clubs are circling, but Real Madrid have moved swiftly to get ahead of the competition.

In line with Florentino Perez’s new strategy to “Spanishise” the squad under incoming manager Xabi Alonso, the club has contacted Garcia’s entourage with a clear message:

“We are interested in Joan. Don’t be in a hurry and if there is something a firm offer, talk to us before making any decision.”

Madrid want Garcia to replace Courtois

Madrid are thinking long-term. While Courtois remains the present, the club knows the Belgian goalkeeper is entering the final stages of his elite career.

In contrast, Garcia represents a young, homegrown option who could eventually take over the No. 1 shirt without disrupting the squad’s balance.

Importantly, Madrid’s top brass is spearheading this operation. They understand that if Lunin leaves this summer, Madrid must not be caught unprepared.

As for Garcia, his contract situation makes him an accessible target. His release clause stands at €30 million, rising to €35 million if he debuts for the Spanish national team, and dropping to €15 million if Espanyol are relegated, which is still a possibility.

However, Madrid are not rushing. One option being considered is to secure Garcia’s signing now but leave him on loan at Espanyol, allowing him to continue his development and only make the jump when Courtois’s time comes to an end.

While nothing has been finalised, Real Madrid’s approach is clear that they want to stay ahead of the market, secure Spanish talent early, and build a squad capable of sustained success well into the future.
