Real Sociedad manager confident about facing Real Madrid in Copa del Rey semi-final | OneFootball

The Copa del Rey is down to the final four and the draw for the semi-final was held earlier this week.

With Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also in the mix, Real Sociedad was seen as the most favourable opponent for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, especially given the hectic schedule. The draw manifested the same.

The words of the La Real manager Imanol Alguacil, however, paint a completely different story as related by SPORT.

Alguacil’s confidence

Speaking to the media earlier this week, the Basque team’s manager was asked to give his two cents about the Copa del Rey draw where his side drew Real Madrid. Alguacil, however, was unfazed and retained complete confidence in his team.

“I love that we got Real Madrid because if you look back it was the season that we won the Copa del Rey. Why not for the second time?” he said.

The Spanish tactician is referring to the game between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid in the quarterfinal of the Copa del Rey back in 2020 when the two teams locked horns at Santiago Bernabeu.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring in the first half for La Real before an Alexander Isak brace gave Real Sociedad a 3-0 lead. Marcelo pulled one goal back, but the Swedish striker completed his hat-trick and made it 4-1.

Late goals from Rodrygo and Nacho Fernandez brought Los Blancos within touching distance but it simply was not enough to stop the Basque team. Real Sociedad not only won the game but the cup that season.

This time, the two teams will play the fixture over two legs, the first of which will be at Anoeta later this month. The second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu will be held in early April and the winner will progress to the final based on the aggregate score.
