Referee Piccinini Misses Two Blatant Yellow Cards In Inter Milan 1-0 Genoa Serie A Clash

Referee Marco Piccinini missed two blatant yellow cards in yesterday’s Serie A clash between Inter Milan and Genoa.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Referee Marco Piccinini did not have too difficult of an evening at the San Siro yesterday.
And by and large, the referee did get the major decisions correct.
In the ninth minute, Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries had appealed for a penalty after a coming-together with Genoa defender Luca Bani.
However, the Gazzetta note, if anything it was the Inter player who committed the foul. And in any event, it was outside the penalty area and so there was no scope for VAR to intervene.
Meanwhile, Piccinini was quite correct to disallow a late goal by Caleb Ekuban. The Genoa striker had very blatantly fouled goalkeeper Josep Martinez.
However, there were two major blemishes on Piccinini’s performance. He failed to show yellow cards for two blatantly bookable offenses.
Firstly, the referee was extraordinarily lenient in only whistling for a foul but not showing a card when Inter midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan dragged back Fabio Miretti.

It appeared to be a clear tactical foul to stop a counterattack.
However, Piccinini did not book Mkhitaryan. And since the Armenian was one booking away from suspension, that meant that he will be available for next weekend’s clash with Napoli.
Then, Piccinini failed to book Genoa midfielder Patrizio Masini for a tackle on Inter captain Lautaro Martinez.
Piccinini’s tackle was late and out of control. His studs caught the ankle of the Inter captain.
Therefore, it would appear to be a fairly straightforwardly obvious booking.
And yet, Piccinini did not show the yellow card to Masini.
