It is a story that feels both inevitable and yet oddly unexpected: Chelsea considering a move to bring back Ola Aina. According to TBR Football, the Blues are eyeing the Nottingham Forest right-back, a player they once let slip through their fingers. Yet, if Chelsea’s recent transfer policy has taught us anything, it is that no player is ever truly gone forever.
Aina, now 28, has enjoyed a career revival at Forest, where his performances have helped the club to a remarkable third-place position in the Premier League table. His reliability, defensive discipline, and ability to contribute in attack have turned him into one of the most consistent right-backs in the league this season. Naturally, Chelsea are not the only ones taking notice. Liverpool and Manchester City are also reportedly monitoring the situation, making this a transfer race that could define the summer window.

On paper, Chelsea should not need a right-back. Reece James is the club captain, and Malo Gusto has already proven himself to be a solid alternative. Yet, James’ ongoing injury issues remain a major concern. His unavailability has forced Chelsea to rethink their defensive options, making the prospect of signing Aina—who has been ever-present for Forest this season—an appealing one.

For Enzo Maresca, squad depth will be a priority heading into next season. Chelsea’s defensive record has been erratic, and adding a reliable full-back with Premier League experience could help stabilise their backline. Aina’s ability to play in multiple defensive roles also adds versatility, something that modern managers highly value.
Chelsea are not alone in their admiration for Aina. Liverpool are reportedly monitoring him closely, with concerns over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future continuing to linger. The England international is out of contract this summer, and Real Madrid’s interest is no secret. If Alexander-Arnold departs, Liverpool will need a dependable replacement, and Aina’s form makes him a strong candidate.
Manchester City are also believed to be interested, given the uncertainty surrounding Kyle Walker’s long-term future. Walker’s loan move to AC Milan in January included an option to buy, and City may already be preparing for life without their veteran right-back. Rico Lewis has filled the role admirably, but Guardiola could look for a more experienced option to maintain squad balance.

Despite the growing interest in Aina, Nottingham Forest have no intention of losing him easily. His contract is due to expire this summer, but the club holds an option to extend it for another year. Additionally, Forest are reportedly working on a longer-term deal to keep him at the City Ground.
Aina has found stability at Forest, something that has eluded him at times in his career. While the lure of a return to Chelsea or a move to Liverpool or City is tempting, it remains to be seen whether he will opt for a new challenge or continue playing a key role in one of the most remarkable success stories of the season.
For Chelsea fans, the potential return of Ola Aina is a move that comes with mixed emotions. On one hand, Aina is a player who has improved significantly since leaving Stamford Bridge, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent right-backs. On the other, Chelsea have a long history of re-signing former players, with varying degrees of success.
That said, bringing Aina back could make sense. Reece James’ ongoing injury struggles have left Chelsea vulnerable at right-back, and while Malo Gusto has been impressive, depth remains an issue. Aina’s durability and ability to slot into multiple positions could provide the stability the squad needs.
Beyond squad depth, there’s also the question of price. If Forest trigger the extension in Aina’s contract, Chelsea would likely need to negotiate a fee, which could make this a more complicated deal than it initially appears. With Liverpool and City also showing interest, Chelsea cannot afford to wait too long if they are serious about bringing him back.
Ultimately, Aina is a player Chelsea fans will remember as one who never quite got a fair chance at the club. His return, if it happens, would be another chapter in a career that has been built on resilience and reinvention.
