Liverpool’s search for a potential right-back replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold has taken an interesting turn, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong emerging as a serious option. According to Caught Offside, the Dutch defender is on Liverpool’s radar as uncertainty looms over Alexander-Arnold’s future, with Real Madrid strongly interested.
The 23-year-old has a €40m release clause—a figure well within Liverpool’s reach—and is reportedly attracting significant interest from Premier League and La Liga giants. However, while Real Madrid and Barcelona are monitoring his situation, Frimpong’s preference for a move to England could work in Liverpool’s favour.
Frimpong’s attacking and defensive versatility has caught the attention of both Liverpool and Manchester City. The latter, having once developed him in their academy, could consider bringing him back to the Etihad, though no final decision has been made.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s admiration for his dynamic playing style aligns well with the tactical demands of Arne Slot, who values full-backs capable of influencing games in both directions. Should Alexander-Arnold leave for Spain, Frimpong could offer a more direct, attacking alternative, albeit without the deep-lying playmaker qualities that have made Liverpool’s No. 66 unique.
Outside of England, both Real Madrid and Barcelona remain interested. Madrid’s primary focus is still Alexander-Arnold, but Frimpong and Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot are on their shortlist as alternatives. Barcelona, meanwhile, see Frimpong as a key target, with Hansi Flick pushing for his arrival.
While Frimpong currently favours a Premier League move, the lure of playing for a European powerhouse like Madrid or Barcelona cannot be ignored. His decision could ultimately come down to the guarantee of first-team football and tactical fit within his new club.
Frimpong has developed into one of Europe’s most exciting right-backs, contributing 15 goal involvements for Bayer Leverkusen this season. His ability to bomb forward and create chances while maintaining defensive solidity makes him an attractive prospect for any elite club.

With Liverpool facing uncertainty at right-back, securing Frimpong could be a smart, forward-thinking move. However, given the level of competition, they will need to act decisively if they wish to land their target.
For Liverpool fans, the prospect of Jeremie Frimpong in red is an exciting one. With blistering pace, attacking intent, and defensive resilience, he perfectly embodies the modern full-back role. If Alexander-Arnold departs for Real Madrid, Liverpool need a right-back capable of influencing the game both offensively and defensively. Frimpong fits that profile.
One key advantage is his €40m release clause, making him a relatively affordable signing in today’s market. Given that Liverpool have struggled with full-back depth in recent seasons, acquiring a player of his calibre would be an excellent piece of business.
That said, the biggest challenge could be Manchester City’s interest. If Pep Guardiola moves for him, Frimpong may be tempted by a return to familiar surroundings, particularly given City’s track record of silverware. However, with Arne Slot at the helm, Liverpool have an exciting project, and a guaranteed starting role could be the decisive factor.
If Liverpool can move quickly and decisively, Frimpong could be a transformative signing—one that ensures the club remains competitive, even if Alexander-Arnold moves on. With pre-season preparations approaching, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining whether the Dutchman will be calling Anfield his new home.
