Liverpool Injury Update: Gakpo, Bradley and Gomez Latest

Liverpool’s pursuit of the Premier League title remains on track, and as the season enters its decisive phase, Arne Slot’s side are edging closer to a fully fit squad.

A 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the weekend, combined with Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham, has given Liverpool an 11-point cushion at the top, though they have played a game more than their closest challengers.

One of the more significant positives from the win at the Etihad was Cody Gakpo’s return from injury, while Trent Alexander-Arnold completed the full 90 minutes, before being subbed in injury time. That leaves only a couple of concerns in the treatment room as the Reds prepare for a crucial run of fixtures.

Cody Gakpo’s Return Strengthens Liverpool’s Attack

Gakpo’s absence in recent games against Wolves and Aston Villa was felt, but the Dutch forward made his comeback in the closing stages of the City win. Arne Slot had admitted before the game that Gakpo was a “close call” for selection, but ultimately, he made the bench and was given a brief runout.

With his return now confirmed, Gakpo is expected to be in contention to start against Newcastle in midweek as Liverpool look to maintain their momentum at the top.

Conor Bradley Faces More Frustration

For Conor Bradley, this season has been one of both opportunity and frustration. The young right-back was given a chance in the side following Alexander-Arnold’s injury but was forced off just minutes after coming on against Aston Villa.

Slot provided an update on his condition last week, stating: “He still has to come in, so we don’t know yet. I would be completely surprised if he’s involved in the Sunday game, or the Wednesday game against Newcastle. You can assume that’s not going to happen.”

With no clear return date yet, Liverpool will monitor his progress closely.

Joe Gomez Set for Lengthy Spell on the Sidelines

The biggest blow, however, is the extended absence of Joe Gomez. The versatile defender suffered a hamstring injury against West Ham, briefly returned for the FA Cup clash against Plymouth, but pulled up just 10 minutes into that game.

Slot later confirmed that Gomez has since undergone surgery and faces a prolonged spell out of action. “Joe had surgery for his hamstring injury, so he’s out for a long time. He will be back maybe just before the end of the season,” he said.

With a potential return set for May 2025, Gomez’s absence will be a test of Liverpool’s defensive depth in the final months of the campaign.
