Report: Nunez & Diaz Futures Uncertain, Liverpool Turn to Watkins

Liverpool are carefully evaluating Ollie Watkins’ situation at Aston Villa as they explore alternatives to Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider.
While Isak remains a prime target, there is increasing concern that Newcastle’s likely qualification for the Champions League — they currently sit third in the Premier League — could push the 25-year-old’s valuation beyond Liverpool’s reach. With Isak having netted 21 league goals this season, his price tag is expected to reflect both form and potential.
This has led Anfield officials to shift attention towards Watkins, who, despite a productive campaign, finds himself at a crossroads at Villa Park.
Watkins, 29, has seen a reduction in game time of late, starting just one of Aston Villa’s five matches in April. The club’s pursuit of Marcus Rashford may significantly impact the former Brentford man’s future.
“It is believed the door could open for the long-serving Villa striker to depart should they sign Rashford on a permanent basis from Man United this summer.”
Villa’s growing interest in Rashford, who is reportedly viewed as a first-choice centre-forward option, suggests Watkins’ role could diminish even further should a deal be finalised. The England international’s potential arrival could also enable Villa to balance the books, making a Watkins sale more viable.
Watkins’ profile remains strong in the Premier League market. Arsenal had a bid turned down in January, underlining his value to domestic rivals. Liverpool are now thought to be considering whether to rival Mikel Arteta’s side this summer as they look to refresh their attacking options.
Watkins has delivered consistent output this season, scoring 15 goals and providing 12 assists across 47 appearances in all competitions. His reliability and Premier League experience make him an attractive proposition, particularly as Liverpool weigh up future options for Luis Díaz.
Discussions have taken place between Liverpool and Díaz regarding a contract extension, but no breakthrough has been reached. The Colombian winger is under contract until June 2027, yet internal sources suggest he could be allowed to depart if a bid in excess of £60million is received.
“It is believed Liverpool could accept a bid of £60million-plus in the off-season if he is keen to make a move elsewhere.” suggests O’Rourke
Should Díaz depart, Liverpool would be under pressure to bring in proven attacking quality. Watkins, under contract at Villa until 2028, fits the profile: homegrown, versatile, and effective at leading the line.
For now, Aston Villa’s European push continues, but Watkins’ future appears less certain. His reduction in minutes, coupled with the Rashford factor, may provide Liverpool with an opportunity to pounce.
The situation is being closely monitored, and while no move is imminent, Watkins has clearly emerged as a credible target as Liverpool prepare for a potentially pivotal summer rebuild.
