If it's one thing, Southampton feels extremely lucky for, it is their loyal fans. Recently, despite losing, the Saints supporters reacted humorously which impressed defender Sugawara.
Don't you think Southampton boasts a more recognized history than some better-off clubs? Well, if somebody needs to be credited for that, it's their loyal fanbase.
Though fitted in one of the smallest stadiums, Southampton fans create an atmosphere that rivals the grandest arenas.
Be it a relegation phase or a Championship run, their fans have proven to be the perfect 12th man to the team's needs. Such has been the support of the St. Mary's supporters.
Take the example of this season only. Despite it being one of the worst Southampton seasons ever, you will hardly find a seat vacant whenever the club has played.
But hey, if you assume them to be overly passionate or aggressive in Southampton's support, this recent incident is for you.
During the recent matchday between Southampton and Chelsea, the Saints were getting humiliated by the Blues. But the way, the club fans reacted will make your day.
Down by a scoreline of 0-4, the Southampton fans ridiculed themselves, singing, "Battered again, ole, ole".
Just imagine, in a relegation situation, your club fans approach defeats humorously. Can something be better than this? Maybe not. And this is why, defender Sugawara's reaction to it makes perfect sense.
Post-match, the returnee defender was impressed by the fans' comical gesture. As quoted by the Daily Echo, Sugawara said: "For them (the fans), it would be easy for them to say it’s impossible (to support us) or for them to boo but they were clapping and that is impressive for us."
Definitely, given the situation, Southampton feels in, such moments are what might fuel their comeback way.
Remember, it's the fans who bring out the true essence of Football. Clearly, Southampton has this checkbox ticked, the only thing they need is on-the-field improvements. Hoping that it also betters over time as well.
