This past summer, Paris Saint-Germain showed strong interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand. However, Sporting held firm, stating they wouldn’t sell him unless his €80 million release clause was activated.

Last season, the 24-year-old made 49 appearances across all competitions, netting four goals and providing four assists. Hjulmand played a crucial role in helping Sporting Lisbon secure the league title, which has drawn the attention of several top European clubs.

The Parisians have an excellent relationship with Sporting Lisbon following the sales of Nuno Mendes and Manuel Ugarte in recent years, so it will be interesting to see if they can leverage this in any type of negotiation.

Brian Riemer, the former assistant coach at Brentford, has recently been appointed as Denmark’s new manager. He’s made a bold statement about Hjulmand, suggesting that the Sporting captain has the potential to become a key player for several top Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal.

“I spent two years in the Premier League and I think he [Hjulmand] has the necessary qualities to play for the six/seven best clubs in the English league,” Riemer said (via O Jogo).

“Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City… At a certain point in his career, I believe he will arrive at one of these teams.”

Riemer also praised several key attributes of the 25-year-old that give him the feel of a throwback midfielder.

“His character, his leadership, his personality [and] his communication are not very common in today’s football, and I was at many clubs, in Copenhagen, Brentford, Anderlecht,” he added.

“It reminds us of the defensive midfielders of the past, who controlled the entire game, who led the teams, you don’t see that much nowadays. It’s something rare what Hjulmand has. I’m a big fan of his, I think we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg with Hjulmand.”
