The project to build a new stadium in the San Siro has faced another delay as Inter Milan and AC Milan disagree on the statement of interest.
This according to Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, via FCInterNews. They report that the Rossoneri want a clause worded to allow them to leave the San Donato option open.
In recent weeks, Inter and Milan have been working on the idea of building a new stadium in the San Siro area.
This constitutes the latest development in what has been a long and convoluted saga.
For many years, the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri had worked to secure approval to demolish the San Siro. Their aim was to build a new stadium in place of it.
When those plans came to a decisive halt, the clubs looked elsewhere.
In Inter’s case, they focused their efforts on the commune of Rozzano. Milan, meanwhile, went as far as to buy land in the San Donato area to build a new stadium.
Milan Mayor Beppe Sala attempted to convince the clubs to stay at the San Siro by pursuing the idea of renovating the iconic stadium.
Inter and Milan rejected this idea. But they have opened up to the possibility of building a new stadium adjacent to the existing San Siro.
The municipality of Milan has expected an official statement of interest from Inter and Milan in the last few days.
This would be the first step in the process of potentially selling the land to the clubs.
Then, they would be able to begin construction plans after years of waiting.
However, reports La Repubblica, no statement of interest has arrived yet. The reason for this is a disagreement between the clubs on the wording.
According to La Repubblica, Milan want to include a clause in the statement that would leave the possibility of them returning to plans in San Donato instead.
Inter, on the other hand, have all but abandoned the Rozzano idea. They have fully committed to the plan to build a facility adjacent to the San Siro.
Whenever the clubs do finally deliver the statement of interest to the municipality, they will then have to make a decision on the construction project.
Inter and Milan could revive the “Cathedral” project from five years ago. They had initially intended for that project to replace the San Siro.
Alternatively, the two clubs could pursue a new and different construction project.
Then, the municipality would have a decision to make on whether or not to open a new services conference.
All of this would take no less than six months. Therefore, one way or the other, if Inter and Milan do buy land in the San Siro area it will be in the summer of 2025 at the earliest.
