Spurs have bid turned down for Crystal Palace defender

In quite surprise and random news, it has been reported by David Ornstein of the Athletic that Crystal Palace have rejected a "major bid" from Tottenham Hotspur for their central defender and captain Marc Guehi.

Spurs have bid for Crystal Palace captain knocked back

On his Twitter account earlier this morning, Ornstein said: "Crystal Palace reject major bid from Tottenham Hotspur to sign Marc Guehi permanently. Spurs + other clubs expected to try again for 24 year old England international in the summer, when centre back will have 12 months left on Crystal Palace terms ."

There is just genuinely no way that Spurs thought this could happen. Waiting until deadline day to try and sign another Premier League team's captain. The rejection of the bid was no less inevitable than the sun coming down. Just so, so incredibly amataeurish.

Not to mention, Palace lost Trevoh Chalobah earlier in the window when he was recalled, surprisingly, by parent club Chelsea - giving them even more incentive to keep Guehi. There was just simply no way that this was going to be accepted, barring an absolutely ludicrous fee.

Although he mentions that Spurs will try again in the summer, he also states that there will be plenty of competition, as expected. With 12 months left on his contract, the fee could be doable, but that will be the case for all of the other clubs interested, whom no doubt have more ambition than Levy and ENIC.

Quite clear to see what the ploy is here. Give the idea that they "tried" to sign a defender, but that Palace would not budge. Not only was there 31 days of January to make a signing, but an extra three days on top. Spurs have had 34 days to make signings. They've had 34 days to bid for Guehi, and decide to do it on the last day.

So far, Spurs have still made just the two signings, with one outfielder - who was signed on day 33 of 34. That is not to diminish the quality of Antonin Kinsky, whom has been very good in the most part - and Kevin Danso is definitely a good fit. But Spurs needed more, and they could have got more if they were, well - more serious.

It has been a good last few days, with wins in the Europa League and Premier League, as well as the signing of Danso - but don't let that distract you from the fact it has been another failure of a window - as of 10:45 GMT.
