The BBC are reporting that Brighton would be willing to sell striker Evan Ferguson this month if they receive a good offer.
From being considered one of the best young strikers in the league, and the presumptive heir to Harry Kane’s legacy, Ferguson has endured a remarkable decline. It’s hard to tell to what degree he was overrated to begin with, and to what degree other factors may have played a role.
Chelsea were being linked with him as far back as February 2023, when he was just 6 months into his Premier League career and only 18 years old. At the time, Fabrizio Romano called him a “super young talent” and predicted a huge transfer fee. But things have gone south ever since.
Quite incredibly, he’s scored just once this season – in October – and that’s his only goal since November 2023. After bursting onto the scene he was nominated for the Player of the Year award in May of that year – showing just how astonishingly fast his fall has been.
The arrival of Roberto de Zerbi didn’t help him, but even the Italian coach’s departure hasn’t got the young Ireland international’s career going again. It’s a complete mystery how one can fall so far, so fast.
It’s a sign of how far Ferguson’s stock has fallen that Chelsea aren’t even mentioned as being in the mix – and that their fans aren’t clamouring for them to make a bid, in contrast to the situation with the likes of Jhon Duran.
We were briefly linked earlier this month, but that never sounded too convincing. It seems like we dodged a bullet on this one. Nicolas Jackson is not perfect, but he offers a lot and we certainly wouldn’t trade him for Ferguson now. The question remains – who do we buy to share the load with Jackson?
