After informing Bayern Munich of his desire to leave this month, Mathys Tel has reportedly singled out Old Trafford as his preferred destination.

Indeed, the 20-time champions must still be doing something right amidst their most tumultuous period if young starlets such as Tel are choosing United over a host of other interested clubs – or even staying with the Bundesliga giants.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Tuesday that the 19-year-old livewire has decided to leave Bayern after almost three years at the club in search of playing a more prominent starting role elsewhere.

Such wishes have discouraged Tel from signing for Chelsea, where he is likely to be granted only substitute cameos due to the lengthy list of attackers Enzo Maresca has at his disposal. Striker Christopher Nkunku has now grown accustomed to playing second to Nicolas Jackson, while Joao Felix is looking to depart Stamford Bridge after falling in the pecking order.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur privately established their interest in welcoming the wantaway Frenchman to North London – until reputable journalist Paul O Keefe dealt their fans a substantial blow this afternoon, writing: “The boy (Tel) wants Man Utd. Let’s see how Bayern play that.”

It remains to be seen what kind of fee the Bavarians would demand for their sought-after teenager, who became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer when he opened his account at just 17 years and 126 days old. He made his full league debut shortly after, during which he notched his maiden Bundesliga goal.

Bayern’s Hasan Salihamidžić said of Tel in the aftermatch of his meteoric breakthrough: “He feels very comfortable in the middle, as a centre forward or a false nine. If Mathys comes from the left, he can get into goalscoring positions a bit better. He has everything a really good offensive player needs.”
