Leo and Luis link up for 100th combined goal of their legendary careers

Luis Suarez set up Lionel Messi’s 19th-minute golazo against Sporting KC on Tuesday, the duo reached a special milestone; it was the pair’s 100th goal together.

Suarez-Messi, Messi-Suarez…for six season at Barcelona and at Inter Miami from the beginning of last season, the Uruguayan striker (Suarez) and Argentine icon are among the most productive attacking partnerships in soccer history. Suarez has more assists, 55. While the stars are nearing the end of their careers (Suarez is 38 and Messi is 37) but should continue adding to their phenomenal resume through 2025 and, hopefully, 2026. Goal.com posted a report on the partnership here.

Partners in penalties. Messi and Suarez shared a less complimentary distinction from Saturday’s opening MLS match against New York City FC. The MLS Disciplinary Committee assessed both stars undisclosed fines for violating the league’s hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent policy in separate incidents; Suarez transgressed while walking to the tunnel at halftime, while Messi saved his ire until after the match.

Inter Miami took an early lead and it looked like the Herons might rout the Chase Stadium visitors, but the squad lost its composure after referee Alex da Silva assessed a red card against Tomás Avilés in the 23rd minute for a foul denying a goal-scoring opportunity (the tug happened just prior to Avilés‘ tackle that dropped the attacker into the penalty box). It’s unclear what upset Suarez and Messi, but it likely stemmed from Da Silva’s seeming reluctance to card New York player Strahinja Tanasijevic after a physical foul on Suarez just before halftime. If given, it would have been Tanasijevic’s second yellow and an automatic ejection, evening the sides in the second half.

The Herons salvaged a 2-2 draw when Telasco Segovia scored an equalizer on a Messi assist in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time. Michele Kaufman, the Miami Herald’s soccer writer, reported the fines here.
