Manchester City will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States in June. There is a conversation to be had about the wisdom of adding another tournament to the already crowded football calendar. But from a Manchester City point of view, there is now a real possibility that they can get a jump on their summer transfer business through their participation in the competition. With the Premier League announcing a new double transfer window, the world champions could potentially start their summer business early ahead of the competition.
Yesterday the Premier League announced that there will be two separate transfer windows this summer. The first transfer window will be open from June 1 to June 10. Following that the second transfer window will run from June 16 to September 1. In a statement released yesterday, the Premier League said: “Premier League clubs have today agreed the dates for the Summer 2025 Transfer Window. The window will open early, between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup. It will then reopen on Monday 16 June and close on Monday 1 September.”
With the changes to the transfer window for this summer, Manchester City has the opportunity to get about their work in the summer transfer window early. The opportunity is there for them to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup. Based on the size of the rebuild City will be undertaking that opportunity must be seized upon. If they could add one or two players in the first summer transfer window, it would allow Pep Guardiola to integrate them into his squad for the Club World Cup and get a head start on pre-season. The fact that Manchester City will have a shortened pre-season does give the impression that the Club World Cup should be used as a pre-season of sorts ahead of the 25/26 season.
Manchester City have the opportunity to get a head start on their summer transfer business. It’s an opportunity you do feel that City must take. By doing so it could aid their chase to secure Club World Cup. But it could also set them up for the 25/26 season as well.
