Enzo Maresca has revealed what Chelsea’s plan is for Aaron Anselmino having recalled the youngster from his loan spell at Boca Juniors.
The Blues agreed a deal to sign the 19-year-old in the summer from Boca for £15m and loaned him back to the Argentine club for the season.
Anselmino is the latest in a number of signings from South America as the Blues have increasingly targeted that market under the new ownership as they look to find the best talent the continent has to offer.
It’s likely Chelsea’s initial plan wouldn’t have been to recall Anselmino but the move makes sense now after Maresca confirmed Wesley Fofana could miss the rest of the season, whilst Benoit Badiashile is out until February.
Chelsea are unable to bring back Trevoh Chalobah as there’s no recall option in his loan deal with Crystal Palace, and Maresca has hinted the Blues could now go into the market.
Chelsea paid £15m to sign Anselmino in the summer.
Anselmino has impressed at Boca Juniors and club president Juan Roman Riquelme believes the defender has what it takes to reach the top.
However, Anselmino isn’t an immediate answer to Chelsea’s defensive injury crisis with the teenager not ready to go into the first team yet and Maresca has confirmed what the plan is for the youngster.
“No, at the moment the plan is to keep him here, to allow him to work with us and then to take a decision.,” he told his pre match press conference.
Maresca was then asked about whether he feels Anselmino is ready for the first team and responded:

“No, if he’s here it’s because we think he’s a good player and he can help us. But for sure he’s very young and he’s coming from Argentina, completely different culture, different football, different level. So he needs time for that.”
Right now Chelsea only have three fit recognised centre backs in Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi and it will be interesting to see what the club do in January.
