Defences are the foundations on which good sides are built but which Premier League teams have been the toughest to break down so far this season?

=4. Chelsea, Tottenham, Brighton, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest – 2

Five teams are tied on two clean sheets for the campaign, including top-four hopefuls Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle. The latter are aiming to rediscover the defensive strength that saw the Magpies post the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League on route to Champions League qualification in 2022/23.

Brighton have also recorded two clean sheets, though have been increasingly vulnerable in recent weeks. The Seagulls have conceded 2+ goals in each of their last four games across all competitions.

Nottingham Forest also have two clean sheets with summer signing Nikola Milenkovic having caught the eye in partnership with Murillo at centre-back.

3. Arsenal – 3

Arsenal have had the division’s meanest defence in each of the last two seasons, with Mikel Arteta having revolutionised the side from the back. William Saliba and Gabriel Maghalaes are arguably the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League right now, a complementary defensive duo.

With Riccardo Calafiori hitting the ground running, Jurrien Timber back to full fitness and Ben White in their ranks, Arsenal have real strength in depth in defence this season.

2. Manchester United – 4

Manchester United’s place on this list might surprise some following a tough start to the season for Erik ten Hag’s team. The Red Devils are 14th in the table after their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

Despite those concerning statistics, only one side has kept more clean sheets than United this season. Ten Hag’s team have shut out Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa so far this season, following a goalless draw with the latter before the international break.

Andre Onana currently leads the race for the Premier League’s Golden Glove.

1. Liverpool – 5

Liverpool lead the Premier League for clean sheets having recorded five shutouts in 2024/25. Arne Slot has made an impressive start to his reign at Anfield, winning nine of his first 10 games across all competitions.

Liverpool sit top of the Premier League table at October’s international break and their defensive strength has been a big part of their success.

After minimal changes in terms of transfers in the summer, an experienced backline featuring Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson has shown the benefit of familiarity with your teammates.
