FC Bayern Munich – like all other participating clubs – are facing novel contractual issues ahead of the coming club World Cup. Among these is the question of how to deal with players on expiring contracts. European footballers receive contracts valid through June 30th. The new club World Cup runs through July 13th.
The German record champions currently have four players – keeper Sven Ulreich, defender Eric Dier, attacker Leroy Sané, and Müller – sitting on expiring deals. At the very least, all four will have to sign “mini-extensions” in order to be able to participate in the tournament.
The question as to what will happen with German footballing legend Müller constitutes a topic of big interest for German footballing lovers. The 35-year-old has never represented another club and may not wish to continue his career elsewhere.
Despite the fact that Müller has largely kept his trademark sense of humor about his contractual situation, a Sport Bild report currently suggests that the record-breaking veteran is now rightly offended that the FCB bosses have tendered little in the way of an extension offer.
The German tabloid says that Müller is due to meet with club management this week. The offer expected to be tabled may nevertheless not be the most satisfactory. Bayern only wish to offer Müller a “mini-extension” for the coming tournament.
Müller is reported to earn an annual salary of €17m. It may very well be the case that Bayern find their coffers drained after signing players such as Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala to lucrative extensions earlier this year.
It remains to be seen if Müller can swallow being the “odd man out”. A consummate “team player”, “Radio Müller” is also known to be one of the fiercely competitive footballers in the history of the German game.
