Ange Postecoglou’s honeymoon period at Tottenham Hotspur appears well and truly over. The Australian, once hailed for his attacking philosophy and refreshing honesty, now finds himself under increasing scrutiny. Spurs’ 3-0 defeat to Marco Silva’s Fulham has left them languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, a stark contrast to the early-season optimism. With just nine games left, the club faces a pivotal crossroads.

Tottenham’s Europa League campaign is now being viewed as critical to Postecoglou’s future. While there has been “no suggestion from Tottenham that Postecoglou would be sacked if Spurs were to fail to win the Europa League or were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Eintracht Frankfurt,” the competition represents more than just silverware. A successful run could salvage their season, offering a backdoor route to the Champions League.
Yet performances remain unconvincing. Tottenham struggled past AZ Alkmaar in the last 16, and their recent domestic form suggests further European progress is far from guaranteed. Since key players returned from injury, Spurs have failed to beat Bournemouth and Fulham—games they would have been expected to win comfortably earlier in the campaign.

and Marco Silva are reportedly among the leading candidates suggests The Telegraph. Iraola has done a remarkable job at Bournemouth, guiding them towards European qualification despite operating with a fraction of Spurs’ resources. His Bournemouth side will also contest the FA Cup quarter-finals against Manchester City after the international break.
Bournemouth, understandably, are keen to retain their head coach. “There have been reports that Bournemouth want to extend Iraola’s contract, although sources close to his camp have indicated that he would be interested in the prospect of taking over at Tottenham.” With his contract running until 2026, Bournemouth owner Bill Foley is set to discuss his future when he visits the UK next month.
Silva, meanwhile, continues to enhance his reputation at Fulham. His side’s comprehensive victory over Tottenham reinforced his managerial credentials, but doubts persist over his long-term future at Craven Cottage. “Sources have cast doubt on Silva’s future at Fulham past this season, believing he and the club could be heading for a parting of the ways.” The Portuguese coach has a £6 million release clause, a sum Tottenham could potentially trigger if they decide to move on from Postecoglou.

While Postecoglou remains popular with large sections of the fanbase, tensions have begun to surface. His team selection in the Fulham defeat raised eyebrows, with Wilson Odobert, James Maddison, and Lucas Bergvall all starting on the bench despite strong performances in Europe. The decision to rest captain Son Heung-min also fuelled speculation that Postecoglou is prioritising the Europa League over the league campaign.
This strategy may prove costly if Spurs fail to lift the Europa League trophy. Their upcoming Premier League fixtures include trips to Chelsea and Arsenal, meaning further points could be dropped. A late-season surge is needed, but confidence appears fragile, and faith in Postecoglou is waning.
The sight of Postecoglou engaging with an angry supporter after the Fulham defeat only highlighted the growing discontent. The Australian prides himself on directness, but he now finds himself fighting against a narrative that his tenure is faltering.
Spurs fans find themselves in a state of cautious concern. On one hand, Postecoglou has had to navigate an injury crisis that has undeniably hampered progress. On the other, recent performances have been uninspiring, and questions are rightly being asked about his tactical decisions.
Tottenham’s season could still end on a high if they secure Europa League glory, but that remains a significant ‘if.’ The club’s form has nosedived, and the pressure is mounting with every dropped point. The notion of Iraola or Silva stepping into the dugout is intriguing, but sacking Postecoglou would be a drastic step given the early promise he showed.
For now, Spurs supporters will be watching nervously. Should results fail to improve, Daniel Levy may feel forced into making another managerial change—something that has become all too familiar at Tottenham in recent years.
