VAR and goal line technology both had a role to play in yesterday 3-2 thriller between Inter Milan and Monza in Serie A.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. highlight how it was a tricky evening for young referee Luca Zufferli. He needed to turn to his technology.

In the end, Inter Milan managed to score three goals yesterday. And they needed to, to respond to being caught cold twice by Monza on the counterattack.

And the Nerazzurri were just about good value for that haul. They certainly created no scoring chances.

But there was always a hint of uncertainty when Inter had the ball in the back of the net, it seemed.

Early in the first half yesterday, Inter captain Lautaro Martinez looked to have popped up with an early goal to get his team in gear.

It was hardly a surprise to see the Argentine get himself on the scoresheet when his team needed him.

However, a lengthy VAR check revealed that Martinez had handled the ball just before scoring.

Therefore, Zufferli rightly disallowed the Nerazzurri captain’s goal.

Then, there was a fairly long check on Inter striker Marko Arnautovic‘s equalizer.

And lastly, Inter had to wait a little while for the goal line technology to award them their winning goal.

It was Brianzoli defender Giorgios Kyriakopoulos who was unfortunate to turn the ball into his own net.

But it wasn’t immediately apparent that that was what had happened. In fact, it seemed that Monza keeper Stefano Turati had just barely kept the ball from crossing the line.

However, after a lengthy wait, goal line technology confirmed that the ball had in fact crossed the line.
