Two Bundesliga players nominated for African player of the year

The shortlist of players for the African player of the year award have been announced with two Bundesliga players making the list.

The decision is based on the performance of the nominated players between January and October 2024.

Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba have both been nominated.

Guirassy has enjoyed a successful goalscoring year by scoring 12 times in 15 matches since the turn of the year. The striker ended the Bundesliga season with 28 goals for Stuttgart and finished second behind Harry Kane in the golden boot race.

The 28-year-old also reached the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with Guinea.

Guirassy then moved to Borussia Dortmund in the summer where he has scored seven goals in eight matches across all competitions so far.

He has also found the net five times in two matches in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers during the October international break.

Edmond Tapsoba enjoyed a highly successful year as he was a regular in the defence of the Bayer Leverkusen side that went unbeaten in their league title winning season.

In addition, he also lifted the DFB-Pokal to complete the double and then Super Cup at the start of the new season in August.

The 26-year-old also played every minute for Burkina Faso in the Africa Cup of Nations where they were knocked out in the round of 16.

A total of ten players were nominated for the award who are as follows:

Amine Gouiri (Algeria / Rennes), Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso / Bayer Leverkusen), Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast / Brighton & Hove Albion), Chancel Mbemba (DR Congo / Marseille), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea / Borussia Dortmund), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco / Paris Saint-Germain), Soufiane Rahimi (Morocco / Al Ain), Ademola Lookman (Nigeria / Atalanta), William Troost-Ekong (Nigeria / Al Kholood), Ronwen Williams (South Africa / Mamelodi Sundowns).

The winner of the award will be announced at the ceremony in Marrakesh on 16th December.
