Juventus have officially sacked their head coach Thiago Motta and will thus equal a record from 1963-64 along with AC Milan.
Milan decided to part ways with Paulo Fonseca at the end of 2024, replacing him with the compatriot Sergio Conceicao. Now, following two heavy defeats and a slow season overall, Juventus have announced the sacking of Thiago Motta, hiring Igor Tudor as the replacement.
Both Milan and Juventus have sacked a manager each before the end of the season, in other words, and the last time that happened was in 1963-64 as highlighted by PianetaMilan. The Bianconeri replaced Paulo Amaral with Eraldo Monzeglio then, while the Rossoneri replaced Luis Carniglia with Nils Liedholm.
It says a lot about the situation that both clubs find themselves in, with optimistic projects that haven’t come anywhere near the intended destination. Of course, it must be noted that football is different these days and sackings have become common, so what happened back in 1963-64 was perhaps even more remarkable.
Juventus are currently five points ahead of Milan and there are many teams in the top-four race, which should make for an exciting season finale (for the neutrals). Then again, we are talking about two historic clubs in turmoil at the moment.
