‘Utterly unconscionable’: Amorim has every right to feel aggrieved at what INEOS have allowed to happen this month

With now just nine hours of the transfer window remaining, Manchester United look no closer to sanctioning a third arrival of the window.

Thus far, the Red Devils have welcomed full-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and highly-rated youngster Ayden Heave, a centre-half, from Arsenal’s academy. Both defenders were unveiled to supporters ahead of kick-off on Sunday.

What is pretty remarkable, though, is that INEOS chiefs have failed to negotiate a deal for a forward – even just on loan – despite seeing just how dire the side has been in front of goal this season.

From their perspective, they granted Erik ten Hag with the addition of Joshua Zirkzee last July, though both he and Rasmus Hojlund have endured stagnant form since 2024/2025 got underway.

Not only does the current strikers’ clinicality leave a lot to be desired, but United have signed off on three attackers’ loan exits over the last fortnight: Ethan Wheatley departed for League Two leaders Walsall, Antony signed for Real Betis, and, yesterday, Marcus Rashford’s move to Aston Villa was announced.

Amorim is now left with three fewer options than when he took the reins in November, all while the club are on course to oversee a worst-ever Premier League finish on record.

Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst took to X/Twitter to react to the Reds’ transfer business – or lack thereof – by pointing the finger at two key figures in Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s hierarchy.

“Utterly unconscionable MUFC have gone this long in the transfer window without signing a goalscorer whilst letting three forwards go. The blame for that lies at the feet of [Jason] Wilcox and [Omar] Berrada,” said the journalist ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Alas, pressure will hugely fall onto the shoulders of young quartet Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, Hojlund and Zirkzee from now until the summer.
