“Very popular” Chelsea star has been a “mentor” for two young players – but can’t get around this huge problem

Jadon Sancho’s future is back in the headlines.
The winger has been struggling for form of late, and there’s increasingly convincing talk from some major outlets and well connected transfer insiders that Chelsea may pay a penalty clause to not sign him from Manchester United permanently at the conclusion of his loan this summer.
Nizaar Kinsella was among those writers, with a piece for the BBC that came out yesterday evening going into some detail on how we reached this point. In a Tweet following the publication of that piece, Kinsella made it very clear that there were no problems with Sancho at Chelsea, just questions about his ability:
“There’s no sense that Sancho has done anything wrong, he’s very popular in the squad and does a lot of extras away from training,” Kinsella noted.
“He’s one of the senior players and acted as a mentor for Tyrique George and Josh Acheampong- among others.”
Jadon Sancho pings one off the crossbar in training at Cobham.
He seems a nice guy, popular with his teammates and clearly helping out some of the youngsters in the squad. But that was never the issues, the problem is his production on the pitch.
After scoring against Tottenham in December, Sancho revealed that Chelsea staff had been telling him to shoot more and be more selfish to get his numbers up. But he hasn’t taken that advice to heart. He’s had only 13 shots since then, 2 on target and scored 0 goals.
You can do as much extra curricular training and youth team coaching as you want. If you go 4 months without a goal as a winger at an elite team, your days are going to be numbered. There’s still time to turn things around, but we’re not surprised by the rumours one bit.
