Vinicius Junior has apologised after his red card in Real Madrid's 2-1 victory over Valencia on Friday evening.

The Brazil forward was given his marching orders with 11 minutes to go for pushing Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski, with his side 1-0 down and reeling from Jude Bellingham's missed penalty earlier in the second half.

Just when it looked like Madrid were down and out, Luka Modric tied things up in the 85th minute, before Bellingham atoned for his error with a 95th-minute winner to send Los Blancos through to the Super Cup final.

Now able to celebrate the victory, Vinicius took to social media to write: "Sorry and thanks team!"

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was not happy with the dismissal and confirmed after the game that the club will launch an appeal, arguing Vinicius was provoked by Dimitrievski.

"We thought it wasn't a red card, it was two yellow cards," Ancelotti said. "We are going to appeal, I don't think there will be a sanction for him. We think it wasn't a red card.

"There was a touch from Dimitrievski and then a push from Vini. I think that with two yellow cards it was settled. Vini suffered and I don't want to say that he fell into the trap. There are days when things go well for him and other times a little less so. Hopefully he can play in the next game."

MARCA state the Spanish Football Federation have already acknowledged that Vinicius was provoked and are planning to issue a two-game ban, rather than the traditional four-match suspension that comes with typical acts of violent conduct.
