Raphinha became one of the most talked-about figures following Barcelona’s clash with Real Betis, despite only featuring in the final stretch of the match.
The winger appeared visibly frustrated after the 1–1 draw, not only due to Barcelona’s missed opportunity to increase the lead over Real Madrid to six points but also because of a number of refereeing decisions that further fuelled his anger.
In the final stages of the match, Raphinha was unhappy with the assistant referee’s decision to award a throw-in to Real Betis when he felt it should have gone the Blaugrana’s way.
And seconds later, referee Gil Manzano decided to blow for the final whistle, when it seemed like he was going to overrule his assistant.
This decision sparked a furious reaction from Raphinha, who had to be held back near the tunnel by coach Hansi Flick and Marc-Andre ter Stegen to prevent a potential sanction.
However, Raphinha’s frustration was not to be contained as he clashed with one of Manzano’s assistant referees over what he believed was an incorrect decision.
DAZN cameras captured the heated exchange, which was later aired by El Dia Despues on Movistar.
The altercation began with Raphinha shouting: “It is that way, it is that way, damn it. What are you saying? You shut up.”
His anger escalated further when the assistant referee tried to calm him down. Raphinha shouted back:
“You are not going to tell me to shut up. I will not shut up. That is the last time you tell me to be quiet. What do you think you are doing? F*** your mother.”
The assistant responded: “Do not shout at me,” but Raphinha ignored the instruction and continued the confrontation.
Even after the final whistle, Raphinha was not finished. He approached the assistant once more, accusing him of disrespect: “You are rude, you are rude. Do not tell me to shut up.”
Thankfully for Raphinha and Barcelona, he is not facing any sanctions over the incident, with the referee opting not to mention it in his official match report.
Furthermore, as reported earlier this week, the Brazilian international realises that his behaviour was not appropriate and is eager to turn the page on it and focus on the Borussia Dortmund game.
