The rivalry between Blues and Villa has remained as passionate as ever this season
Some Birmingham City players have joined in supporters' anti-Aston Villa chants this weekend as the club's record-breaking League One season reached its conclusion on Saturday.
Blues have broke several club, divisional, EFL and now world records as they prepare for life back in the Championship following what has been the most enjoyable campaign at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park for many a year.
In what was Chris Davies' first season as a manager, his side managed to extend their record-breaking points haul to 111 with a 2-1 victory over Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium and became the first team in English football history to hit 34 wins in a league season.
Regardless of being two divisions apart for the first time in 30 years, the rivalry and off-field banter between Bluenoses and those at Villa Park has been as passionate as ever, with Villa fans firing digs at Birmingham's promotion on April 8th as they prepared for their recent UEFA Champions League quarter-finals against PSG just one of several instances that make the Second City Derby so hotly-contested and a must-watch when it does come around.
Those in the boadroom in B9, in particular, Tom Wagner, have made it no secret that they want to compete with Unai Emery's outfit again as soon as possible, as well as 'thanking' those in B6 for engaging with the club's social media posts as a result of bonuses received related to engagement numbers.
It has somewhat become the norm, especially in the age of modern football, for supporters of rival clubs - geographically or divisional - to take several aims after a defeat or missed opportunity when it comes to the season's aim, and they are so often greeted with responses such as 'obsessed'.
Blues fans were seen joining along with Crystal Palace's adopted 'Glad All Over' ahead of their final home game against Mansfield Town on April 27th, with Oliver Glasner's side denying Villa a shot at their first major trophy since 1996 with a 3-0 success in the FA Cup semi-final.
And, after returning to the West Midlands, video footage has emerged of the likes of fan favourite Alfie May, reserve keeper Brad Mayo, Keshi Anderson, Alex Cochrane and Ben Davies all joining in, in some form, with the infamous "S**t on the Villa" chant that can be heard on the Tilton and many away grounds across the country.
Unsurprisingly, this has led to mixed responses from both sets of supporters, with one Villa fan quoting the tweet with "What's an Alfie May?" whilst one Blues fan responded to the tweet with "Lifetime contract for Alfie May. Name a stand after him. Build the statue. The lot."
As a result of the two clubs' mixed fortunes, Villa and Blues haven't played a derby against each other since March 2019, in which boyhood Villan and current Manchester City playmaker, Jack Grealish, was punched by a supporter before going on to silence St Andrew's with a 67th-minute winner.
Blues fans will be hoping to swiftly get promotion out of the Championship or see them pitted against the European chasers in either the EFL Cup or FA Cup, with time running out to see another clash take place at St Andrew's, as Wagner's dream of a new 60,000-seater stadium continues to gather pace.
Even more so, it is Birmingham who would like to prove a point when it comes to bragging rights, having beaten Villa just once in all competitions since March 2005, as well as coming second-best in terms of league placements in every season since 1974/75.
