Tony Mowbray could get the best out of John Swift and Jed Wallace, a huge boost to the Baggies
It's a hectic time for West Brom with a new manager being appointed during the midst of a busy January transfer window, but Tony Mowbray appears keen to see what fringe players can do before looking elsewhere.
Championship stalwarts like John Swift and Jed Wallace have played bit-part roles for the Baggies this season under Carlos Corberan, a decision which has clearly bewildered Mowbray if his recent comments are anything to go by.
Wallace and Swift have over 660 Championship appearances and over 200 goal involvements between them, showing just what they could bring to West Brom in the coming months, and if Mowbray is able to get the pair fit and firing again, it could well be better than any new signing.
Swift has started just 12 of West Brom's Championship games this season, while things have been even more difficult for Wallace, with the Baggies' club captain making just three Championship starts.
These are two players who have shown they're two of the best players in the division on their day in recent seasons, and their lack of playing time has been baffling to Mowbray,
When quizzed by The Express and Star about their futures at The Hawthorns, Mowbray said: "What I found at this club, there's not too many of them (moaners or sulkers) and yet from the outside looking in I might be thinking, because I'm on record, I've said I always thought Jed Wallace was one of the best players in the league.
"What a footballer, at Millwall. A one-man show, really. He was devastating.
"Yet here I find him on the fringes of the team, on the cusp of the team. Is he alright? What's he feeling? So I sit down with Jed, and I'll talk to him about my thoughts and what I'm thinking. Same with John Swift. You can throw John into that as well. What a footballer at Reading.
"Double figure goals most years. What a player. I've already seen how technical he is and how brilliant he is with the football. Are they okay? I'll talk to them. We'll have a cup of tea, sit down. They'll hopefully feel that I'm a decent human being. I'm here to win football matches.”
Mowbray's clearly keen to talk to the pair and let them know that they still have a future at the club, and if they came back into the reckoning in the coming months, then there's no reason why they can't make a big impact given the quality they possess.
The Baggies have endured some tough days in front of goal this season, and a firing duo of Swift and Wallace surely would have helped them when they were struggling for goals.
Mowbray's capable of getting the best out of players thanks to his man management skills, and the way he's approached this situation shows his class.
If the duo remain at the club this month and impress, Mowbray will deserve huge credit for overturning Corberan's call and for bringing them back into the frame.
After a disappointing first season back in the Championship during the 2021/22 season, then boss Steve Bruce signed Wallace and Swift in the summer of 2022 as two genuinely quality second tier players.
This looked a smart move, with the two players showing their quality at Millwall and Reading previously, and whilst they have shown their quality at times, particularly in previous seasons, they've struggled for games this season for one reason or another.
Mowbray, who is an experienced manager at this level and would have faced the pair previously, will be keen to get them playing regularly as he knows what they are capable of, and having two players like that on your books will make you the envy of most clubs in the division.
Both Swift and Wallace will be frustrated by their lack of playing time this season, but they should see Mowbray's arrival as a clean slate, and as a chance to stake a claim for a starting berth in coming weeks.
