Wrexham are expected to have a very busy summer transfer window, regardless of whether they win promotion to the Championship.

Phil Parkinson’s side are looking to make history this season, with the Red Dragons seeking to go up for a third time in three years.

Despite the backing of Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, this would be a remarkable achievement from the Welsh club, who haven’t played in the second tier since 1982.

Wrexham AFC set for busy summer window

Several of the current squad have been with Wrexham on their journey from the National League, whilst another clutch of signings were made when the club were in League Two.

So, there would be doubts about their ability to cope in the Championship, with new players potentially required in that scenario.

Yet, when asked by FLW to make two predictions for the summer window, fan pundit Liam explained that he anticipates a lot of business to happen irrespective of how the promotion push plays out - which includes more multi-million-pound signings.

“I do think there will be a lot of exits, whether we go up or not. There are a lot of players in that squad that I think personally aren’t good enough, maybe even for League One, never mind the Championship, so I expect a lot of departures.

“I think we will break our transfer record again, which is an easy thing to say, but we continue to get more and more money each year, so that can be put back into the club. We’re obviously building a new stand, but we’ve got new billionaire investors, and I expect them to put some money into the coffers, so we can break our transfer record and really improve the squad with quality over quantity. I do think we need a few key players in key areas.”

Wrexham AFC will need to refresh squad this summer

Most will agree with the above prediction, and the reality is that the Wrexham squad would welcome a refresh no matter what division they’re in.

Parkinson and the current group are working wonders to be where they are right now, but it doesn’t feel sustainable.

For example, there are too many strikers in the squad, with Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer not even making the squad for recent games. You don’t want to be paying players decent wages to sit in the stands, and the age of the squad could benefit from coming down.

Obviously, the immediate focus is winning promotion, but there will be a desire to add real quality to the side in the summer, with four or five players likely to be the ideal number.

That will surely require the club to pay more than the £2m club record they splashed out on Sam Smith in January, and players will have to leave to ensure they have a balanced side.
