Millwall FC fan pundit reacts as Lions join the race for Peterborough United ace Kwame Poku alongside Premier League duo Southampton and Ipswich Town
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Millwall are among a host of clubs vying for the signature of Peterborough United star Kwame Poku, who has managed 15 goal contributions in as many League One appearances so far this term.
That's according to TBR Football, who report that the Lions are interested in the 23-year-old, but face competition from Premier League duo Southampton and Ipswich Town as well as Championship rivals Burnley and Scottish Premiership giants Rangers.
Despite Poku's scintillating form in the final third, Posh sit just 12th in the League One table, although they are just three points behind the play-off places.
But with such high profile interest in the wideman's services, the Cambridgeshire side may have to sell their ace come January, which would hinder their top-six push.
Football League World asked our Lions fan pundit, Chris Chapman, who runs the Chat with Chaps YouTube channel, what his thoughts were on his club's interest in Poku, and whether he would welcome the signing.
Chris said: "Kwame Poku, wow, yes I would (welcome the signing) because I talked about him in the summer.
"Real big fan of him.
"Peterborough have got a habit of having exciting attacking talent, but they also have a habit of then getting very, very high fees for them.
"So I think we'll certainly be in a battle, not just in competitors, but also with generally the finances of the deal, I would imagine.
"I think he hasn't got too long left to run on his contract, which could play into our, or anyone else's favour.
"From what I've seen of him, he's quick, he's direct, can use both feet, scores goals, he's already scored 10 this season.
"He's the exact sort of player that I think would really fit into the system.
"My only concern would be, does that (interest in Poku) mean we are potentially going to lose someone like Romain Esse?
"And then he would be a like-for-like replacement.
"If that's the case, and we can bring Poku in for a third or a quarter of what we sell Esse for, then you'd say that's good business.
"But what a world I'd love to be in, where we had both of those options available to us.
"So, long story short, would absolutely love to see him in a Millwall shirt, as I think most Millwall fans would, but it's early days yet, and I would imagine there'll be a lot of potential suitors."
As alluded to by Chris, Poku is a class act whose clinical form in League One suggests he would be able to perform at Championship level for a club such as the Lions.
The fact that Premier League sides such as Ipswich and Southampton are also eyeing his services speaks volumes about his ability, while the fact that Neil Harris and co could probably offer him more game time than either the Saints or the Tractor Boys would certainly play into their favour.
However, Chris' concerns that the Lions' interest in Poku could be due to the fact that Esse may be leaving are also very genuine, as Crystal Palace are keen on the 19-year-old, according to Alan Nixon.
Of course, the potential combination of Esse and Poku is one which will have Millwall supporters licking their lips, but the Posh player's League One form also suggests he would be a more than adequate replacement for the teenager.
Regardless of Esse's future, Lions fans should be excited by the prospect of Poku playing his trade at the Den, although beating other interested parties to his signature could prove a tough ask.
