Wrexham are gearing up for what may be their toughest challenge yet, but it spells bad news for club legend Paul Mullin
Wrexham AFC already seem to be setting in motion their plans for the Championship.
Spending just one season in League One, they stormed straight to automatic promotion and now have survival in the second tier to contend with next term.
With that in mind, they’ve already been linked with moves for two top-class, experienced strikers who should help with the task if captured.
But, already with an uncertain future in front of him, the links spell further bad news for club legend Paul Mullin.
Both Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City are swapping places with Wrexham in League One, despite having talented forwards at their disposal.
Ryan Hardie and Callum Robinson notched 10 and 12 goals respectively this term, despite playing for sides struggling in the league.
Despite both soon entering the latter stages of their career, neither are likely to drop down with their clubs, and still have plenty to offer a second-tier side; many will presume they’d be even more productive in a better functioning side.
As such, it’s little surprise that, according to journalist Darren Witcoop, Wrexham have both men on their radar.
Even in League One, Mullin found minutes difficult to come by.
He started just nine games all season, notching three goals in his 26 outings in total.
Now in his 30's, having never played above the third tier in his career, it is not form that is screaming readiness for a Championship football.
He’s already had to battle the likes of Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, Ollie Palmer and Steven Fletcher this season, with Smith and Rodriguez being the starting pair for the final three months of the season as Phil Parkinson got the North Wales outfit over the line and into the Championship.
Hardie or Robinson’s arrival would, in all likelihood, immediately make them the main man up front, dropping Mullin even further down the pecking order.
Mullin has a contract running until the summer of 2027 but, if he wants to make full use of the final handful of years he has left at the top level, it seems his best bet is a move away from Wrexham; the club have simply outgrown the levels he’s capable of.
Dispensing with Mullin this summer would set the tone for a difficult but necessary transfer window.
Wrexham’s rapid rise means they still have players, like Mullin, originally recruited to get them out of the National League and League Two. You need an entirely different calibre of player to remain competitive in the second tier.
The journey at the Stok Cae Ras has been all about the characters, with whom fans have developed a deep connection to, enhanced by their behind-the-scenes peek via Disney+ documentary Welcome to Wrexham.
Mullin, alongside owners Ryan Reynolds, has almost been the main character throughout that journey, but now there’s little hiding the fact that the Red Dragons are operating on a new level.
These transfer links spell bad news for Mullin’s future with Wrexham but, in truth, if it’s not Robinson or Hardie, it will be someone else. This summer seems the natural junction for the striker to part ways with the club he’s had such a pivotal role in progressing.
