This Saturday marks the final matchday of this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League, with Arsenal set to host Manchester United at Emirates Stadium [12:30 BST, 13:30 CEST].
While both teams have already secured their spots in next year’s UEFA Women’s Champions League, the battle for second place in the WSL will be decided – and a later entry into the UWCL qualifying stages – here, with Arsenal holding a narrow one-point advantage over United.
Earlier in the season, Arsenal and Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw at Leigh Sports Village. Alessia Russo opened the scoring against her former side, giving Arsenal the lead, but Melvine Malard’s late equaliser meant the points were shared, denying the Gunners their first win at LSV since 2021.
This Saturday will mark the 13th meeting between the two sides. Arsenal have the upper hand with five wins to United’s four, but with the Red Devils closing in on second place, it’s set to be a fiercely contested encounter to close off the season.
Over the course of the season, Arsenal have registered one more win [14] than Manchester United, but Skinner’s side have been more consistent with two extra draws while the Gunners have suffered one more loss. Just a fortnight ago, Arsenal looked certain to a chance to cement their second-place finish, but back-to-back losses to Aston Villa and Brighton have left them vulnerable, with United poised to overtake them.
United will be without Rachel Williams and Jayde Riviere for this fixture. Riviere was forced off with an ankle injury in the team’s previous fixture, the issue is still being assessed by the medical team.
Renée Slegers confirmed that Arsenal “have three players not available and that’s Daphne Van Domselaar, Lina Hurtig and Katie Reid.”
Tickets for the fixture are still available, but for those who cannot make it down to Emirates Stadium, the game will be televised, with kickoff scheduled at 12:30 BST [13:30 CEST].
In the UK, the game will be available to watch live on BBC Two and the BBC iPlayer. Abroad, the game can be followed on the Barclays Women’s Super League YouTube channel.
We predict this fixture to be a thrilling and hard-fought contest. United will bring a strong challenge, but with Arsenal’s home advantage, we expect them to edge out a 2-1 victory in their final match ahead of their UEFA Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona on Saturday 24 May.
