Freiburg

Freiburg head into the weekend in fifth position after winning 12, drawing four and losing eight of their 24 league matches. Julian Schuster’s side are currently enjoying an impressive run of form, having dropped just two points in their last five games. They kicked off that run of results with three consecutive 1-0 victories over Bochum, Heidenheim and St. Pauli, before they cruised to a statement 5-0 win against Werder Bremen.

Their winning run came to an end in Sunday’s goalless away draw against Augsburg, although Freiburg would have been pleased to claim a fifth successive clean sheet. Freiburg will now return to the Europa-Park Stadion, where they have won eight of their 11 home league games this season (D1, L2). They will hope home advantage can help them clinch their first victory over Leipzig since recording a 2-1 home win in October 2019. Since that result, Freiburg have lost seven and drawn three of their 10 head-to-head league meetings.

Freiburg are unable to call upon the services of Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and Bruno Ogbus due to knee and Achilles injuries.

RB Leipzig

Leipzig are sitting two points behind Freiburg in sixth position after experiencing a poor run of form. Die Roten Bullen have recorded just two wins in their last 10 league matches (D5, L3), while they have failed to win any of their previous three Bundesliga games since beating St. Pauli 2-0 on February 9. They played out draws with Augsburg and Heidenheim, before they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Mainz 05 despite taking an early lead through Xavi Simons in the first minute. Simons saw his effort cancelled out by Nadiem Amiri, before Jonathan Burkardt scored the decisive goal to condemn Leipzig to a narrow defeat.

Marco Rose’s side will now head on their travels with hopes of ending their five-game winless away run (D3, L2). Die Roten Bullen can at least take confidence from the fact they have won their last five Bundesliga meetings with Freiburg, scoring at least three goals in four of those victories. They racked up four goals in last season’s trip to Europa-Park Stadion, claiming a 4-1 victory thanks to a Loïs Openda brace and goals from Amadou Haidara and Benjamin Šeško.
