England captain reportedly has release clause in his contract
Arsenal legend Paul Merson claims he “wouldn’t be surprised” if England captain Harry Kane joined the Gunners.
News of a release clause in Kane’s contract at Bayern Munich emerged earlier this week, with German outlet BILD claiming it would soon decrease from £67m to £54m.
Much has been made about Arsenal’s pursuit of a new forward, with manager Mikel Arteta admitting he was disappointed in not having signed one during the January transfer window.
Kane, of course, is a Tottenham legend and the prospect of seeing him play for bitter rivals Arsenal seems beyond remote.
Still, Merson believes the move Sol Campbell infamously made across the north London divide in 2001 sets something of a precedent.
“Arsenal will buy him,” joked Merson on Sky Sports.
When asked whether or not he was serious, the pundit added: “Why not? £64m, why not?
“Sol Campbell did [make the move].
“People will go ‘oh he’s this age and that age’ but Arsenal need now.”
He added: “If Arsenal haven’t won the League, you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to take a chance, buy someone that’s proven.
“I wouldn’t be surprised, and when you’re Harry Kane and you’ve been told you can go for £64m, there’s only a couple of teams who could buy him.
