Carlton Palmer has reacted to talk that Sheffield Wednesday won't be in a position to spend big in January.

Carlton Palmer insists Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl can have no complaints if he is only allowed to sign loan players in the January transfer window at the start of 2025.

It has been claimed that the Owls will be ‘restricted’ in what they can do in the New Year, which caused some concerns among the fan base.

Wednesday have made significant progress under Rohl, and whilst they are 13th in the table, they’re only four points away from the play-off places at this current moment in time.

Therefore, if Wednesday were in that position come January, fans would hope that the club would be able to invest to try and reach the top-flight, but the report suggests that won’t happen.

Yet, speaking to Football League World, ex-Wednesday midfielder Palmer explained that the club are on a long-term project, as he also pointed out that owner Dejphon Chansiri backed the boss in the summer.

“Rohl has obviously sat down with the chairman in the summer, and he can’t argue that the chairman hasn’t backed him in bringing players to the football club," Palmer told FLW.

“As I’ve said before, people are getting carried away with how Sheffield Wednesday finished last season, saying the way they finished and the points tally they got would’ve left them in a play-off position.

“But we all know what happens towards the end of a season. You can get results, like Crystal Palace did (in the Premier League last season).

“At the end of the day, the chairman has backed Rohl, and he is doing a fantastic job. They sit in mid-table, only four points away from the play-offs, so if Rohl can use the loan market to his advantage, to bring in players to enhance the squad, then it’s all good.

“I think it’s going to be tough this season for Wednesday to be in the play-offs given the quality of the sides above them. The firepower and the money these clubs have got makes it difficult for Wednesday to push their way into a play-off position.

“If Rohl can keep them up, and not in a position where they’re looking over their shoulder, then a mid-table finish is a great platform to kick on for the following year. Anything better than that would be a magnificent season.”

This update will cause debate among the supporters, and it’s natural for fans to want the club to go for it if they’re in a position to reach the play-offs in January.

But, it’s easy for the fans to spend someone else’s money, and the reality is that Chansiri may not want to pump more cash in, and we don’t know the financial PSR situation.

As Palmer says, the budget and transfer talks would’ve been planned in the summer, so this won’t be anything new for the boss, and the crucial thing is that Rohl is on the same page as the owner, which is clearly the case.

Wednesday are on a journey under the boss, and they are heading in the right direction, but of course, there is a long time between now and the January transfer window, and who knows what kind of results the South Yorkshire outfit will conjure up in that period.
