Sheffield Wednesday's plans for the January transfer window have become clearer
Sheffield Wednesday are set to have a limited capacity to improve Danny Rohl’s first team squad in the January transfer window.
According to Sheffield Wednesday News, the Owls will be focusing on the loan market when the new year arrives.
The Yorkshire outfit made a number of signings during the summer window following their 20th place finish in the Championship table.
Fees were spent bringing in Iké Ugbo, Olaf Kobacki and Yan Valery to the club, along with several free agent and loan deals made.
Rohl will be hoping to strengthen his team, with the club eyeing a top half finish in the second division standings this year.
Sheffield Wednesday will reportedly have limited resources for the upcoming January transfer window.
It is believed that spending will be restricted, but there could still be room for one or two more temporary additions.
The club are already using up two of their spots for temporary additions with Shea Charles from Southampton and James Beadle from Brighton.
Beadle was one of four loan arrivals from the previous January window, with Ian Poveda, Kristian Pedersen and Ugbo all arriving.
That quartet coming into the team proved crucial, as they all played a part in the club earning a miraculous escape from the relegation zone.
Sheffield Wednesday will also have a focus on players with expiring contracts in 2025, which includes people like Callum Paterson, Anthony Musaba and Akin Famewo.
Rohl will be hoping to reinforce his side, with the team enjoying a positive start to the new campaign.
Any decisions made over their January activity may also depend on their standing in the league table.
There are still 12 games remaining between now and 1 January, which could also dictate their objectives for the second half of the campaign.
Rohl’s side are currently 13th in the Championship table, only four points adrift of the play-off places after 12 games.
The gap to the relegation zone is also just four points, highlighting how the club’s season could still go in either direction in the weeks between now and the winter market opening in the new year.
Sheffield Wednesday have impressed since Rohl’s appointment 12 months ago, with supporters fully behind the German coach after he oversaw their dramatic 20th place finish last season.
Next up for the Owls is a home clash against Watford on 2 November in a 3pm kick-off.
It’s difficult to see Sheffield Wednesday sustaining a promotion challenge this year given how limited their resources are at the moment.
The bigger concern there will be how it impacts Rohl, as he is an ambitious young coach and will want the team to be competing at the highest level possible.
The progress they’ve made this year has been positive, and there should be no pressure to mount a top six challenge at all.
